Susan Obrant refers to her passion as "a 25-year love affair with painting music." It's a passion that finds her giving as much as she gets. And in some ways, more. Certainly, the music serves as her inspiration, providing her with the perfect expression of her devotion, through a most impressive talent.
It's one thing to be moved by music; it's another to be able to describe what you've heard and what impression it has made viscerally. But to be able to turn the tables, as it were, and pay the gods back in kind through the means of another discipline, harnessing one's own mastery in the service of that "payback"! That must be infinitely rewarding.
Years ago, I had occcasion to interview a renowned author-illustrator, and I told him of the pleasure I had, reading his books to my children. I was thrilled by the revelation that he wrote and drew those books with my voice and music accompanying him in his labors. A similar pleasure was mine when Ms. Obrant related that my voice accompanied her as she created the works that greet you here. Music swirls off the canvas as it transforms itself from the auditory experience to the outward, visual revelation of her innermost responses. Inspired, indeed.

La Boheme is a masterpiece, an opera that touches the heart deeply. The great Giaccomo Puccini created such beautiful music, full of intensity and emotion, especially the music for the delicate Mimi.
I sang the role of "Mimi" so many times all over the world, but two very special events will remain with me forever- the recording of La Boheme with Benjamino Gigli, and when the great Arturo Toscanini chose me for Mimi for the 50th anniversary.
The pastel of Susan Obrant reflects the passion, love, and tears of La Boheme. You can feel the very poverty of the young Bohemians and their emotion. I treasure both her imagery and her artist's heart. I know that it will touch the soul of everyone as it did mine.
